Prompt

May 1-2, 2026
Texas State University
MFA Communication Design, Spring Residency

Radius Collective was invited to be the keynote speakers at the 2026 MFA/CD Spring Residency at Texas State University. Over 2 days Radius Collective provided student critiques, presented on their work, and lead a 1 day conceptual design making workshop, Prompt.

Prompt is collaborative workshop that explores the theme of distance through rapid design prompts and experimental making activities that investigate mapping, translation, and movement. By the end of the day, participants transform their collective experiments into a collaboratively designed exhibition assembled on-site.

Prompt Excercise
Far from Home
Typographic Installation
Molly Haig

Use home as a starting point to explore what is lost and what remains as language changes form.

From A Distance
Photographic Curation
James Barkley

Using photography as your medium, take two photographs of the same object: one extreme close up and the other at a distance, transforming perspectives.
Adrift
Dérive Mapping Exercise
Joshua Duttweiler

Complete a walk, recording and installing a collective map of sensory observations.

Reach
Installation and Visualization
Padmini Chandrasekaran

In real time, record, visualize and install data related to the physical reach of the participating individuals. Collect and mark data points points for height, reach to one side, and reach (or jump) above. Connect the points to install and present a shared data visualization.
Part 01: Construction Identity
Papercut Symbols
Kristen Mallia

Flags use color and shape to symbolically represent nations, organizations, and ideas, providing clues about identity, history, culture, and beliefs. What symbols are representative of you as an individual, as a cohort, as a designer, as a human, as the group in this room conducting this experiment? Cut your symbols out of colored paper. Compile into a collective library of symbols and arrange.

Part 02: Repurpose
Photographic Play
Vaishnavi Kumar

Explore documentation as a means of image-making, allowing the study of surfaces, light and shadow, patterns, texture, depth, perspective, and layering— with a focus on paper.

Near/Far (wherever you are)
Sound Installation
Christopher Field

Create multiple audio recordings to accompany the installation in the gallery, one representing the concept word “Near” and one representing the concept/word “Far,” Listen here.

Through the Spring Semester each member of Radius Collective gave an artist talk.
